DIY Coconut Oil and Shea Butter Curl Cream for Natural Curly Hair

If you, like me, have naturally curly hair, you know what I mean when I talk about crazy frizz. The kind of frizz that turns your head into a treasure chest of foliage, insects and anything else that comes within a 10cm radius of your head. The kind of frizz that makes you stare despairingly at a wide-toothed comb for hours, praying that it develop magical powers to glide through your mane without ripping out large chunks of fuzzy curls that you are convinced are still attached to pieces of scalp. Being a converted natural and curly hair lover, I am loath to complain of the downfalls of curly hair, but a dry bush of fuzz surrounding my face is kind of difficult to hide.

So in walks a tub of shea butter (well obviously not literally – it required many hours of Nancy Drew-like internet investigation, payment via EFT, tracking of the current postal crisis while praying for the safety of my precious package and then a glorious moment of unveiling when, in a fury of excitement, that could have been mistaken for derangement, I ripped through the brown paper packaging in front of a slightly scared looking post office clerk, clutching his stapler close to his chest for, what I assume was, protection).

Add to that a few other beauty and pantry essentials, a hand blender and a few hours of refrigeration (which can be hard to come by with the current Eskom schedule) and you have a creamy tub of Coconut Oil and Shea Butter Hair Cream oozing with delightful creaminess. Did I mention how creamy it is? If you have very curly hair, prone to bouts of irrational and downright inconsiderate dryness, your locks will just love this concoction.

Curls gone Wild!

DIY Coconut Oil and Shea Butter Curl Cream for Natural Curly Hair

Coconut Oil and Shea Butter Hair Cream

100g Shea Butter

2 Tbsp Coconut Oil

1 Tbsp Aloe Gel

3 Tbsp Flaxseed Gel

2 tsp Jojoba Oil

5 drops of Peppermint essential oil

5 drops of Lavender essential oil

*Note – you can cut the coconut oil quantity in half if you find the mixture too oily for your liking or add a little extra if you think your locks need a little extra TLC.

Put the coconut oil and shea butter in a glass bowl and mix with an electric mixer. They should both be in solid form before whisking. If you are using a whisk, you are gonna have to pump those biceps and triceps for this part because this mixing session is what is going to give the cream its creamy creaminess – an electric mixer is preferable!

Add the remainder of the ingredients and continue to mix until everything is evenly blended.

And Bob is your uncle…

I keep my cream in the fridge to ensure it maintains its solid form. Don’t worry if little oil pearls form in your cream, they will melt when you smooth the cream into and onto your tresses.

Remember to use the LOC method for your after-wash hair care – water (liquid) first (I like to add a leave in conditioner to the water for added moisture), then coat in a little coconut oil and finally style with your creamy homemade cream. For extra moisture, mix a tablespoon of the cream with about half a teaspoon of your favourite moisturizing (and paraben free) conditioner before applying to your curls.
